Aged steel watches

In watchmaking, aged steel refers to stainless steel that has been deliberately treated to achieve a vintage or worn-out look. This is a purely aesthetic treatment and doesn't affect the functionality of the watch. There are two main reasons why watchmakers use aged steel:

  • Achieve a vintage aesthetic: Many watch enthusiasts appreciate the look of a well-worn watch, which can develop a patina or character over time. Aged steel allows watchmakers to create this look on a new watch, giving it a more timeless appeal.
  • Hide scratches and wear: Stainless steel, while durable, is susceptible to scratches and dings. Aging can help to disguise these imperfections, making the watch look more rustic and less prone to showing everyday wear and tear.

There are a number of ways to age steel, including:

  • Sandblasting: This process roughens the surface of the steel, creating a matte finish.
  • Chemical treatments: Certain chemicals can be used to create a patina on the steel, which can range from a light golden brown to a darker, almost black color.
  • Heat treatment: Applying heat to the steel can cause it to change color, creating a more rustic look.

It's important to note that aging steel is a delicate process, and it's important to use a reputable watchmaker who has experience with this technique. If done incorrectly, the steel can be damaged or even ruined.

Gruppo Gamma first rolled out aged steel finish in 2017.
